Apprentice - no payslip or contract of employment?

Is this right? Dh is getting nowhere asking the college or the person he is working for and the .gov site is a bit confusing. This page suggests he hasn't got a right to a payslip if he's a "worker" www.gov.uk/payslips

But what does this mean in terms of claiming tax credits or keeping HMRC informed of his income (Dh has a second job, due to the low apprentice wage so we try and keep them as up to date as possible on what he's earning). We're assuming that no payslip means no tax or NI is being paid on the money he earns as an apprentice?

The question is whether or not he is an employee. The term "worker" refers to non-employees. If he is an employee he is entitled to payslips.

It isn't essential he has a contract but, assuming he is an employee, the employer is required to give him a written statement of employment particulars within 2 months of the start of employment.
