Police force recruitment and dyslexia

OH applied to police force and passed all stages, but failed on spelling. He has always suspected dyslexia as never took an English GCSE at school. He has problems spelling certain words or getting letters in the right order.
When applying for the police force he didn't tick the box to say he was dyslexic but since failing the spelling we have wondered what he could do next prior to him applying again. Is there some kind of official assessment? Does anyone know what proof the police would need to show he was dyslexic if this is the case, so next time he could tick the box. Or can anyone just tick it and they take your word for it?

I'm sorry to hear that, coffeemonster. It's definitely worth having an assessment, as dyslexia is covered under the Equality Act and he would get special dispensation.
There are some good checklists here: www.workingwithdyslexia.com/
and you can find a local assessor here:

Also, Dyslexia Action provide a free advice session, so you might want to talk to them? www.dyslexiaaction.org.uk/

Thankyou so much for your reply. I'll get on and have a look at those links.

In my Force anyone disclosing dyslexia is given extra time during the recruitment process and may be able to use a computer for the written tests.
