advice - reduction to hours

doodlepigs11 · 02/10/2014 16:49

I have just been given 6 weeks warning that my hours are being cut from 36 to 24. This is affecting all the staff, the business is now only going to operate three days a week, so 24hrs is all there will be to work. Does anyone know where I stand on this? Am I entitled to any kind of (for want of a better word) compensation? Thanks

Don't think so if you've had notice.

How long have you been there?

I have been there coming up for two years, the other staff vary from 6months to approx 5 years. We are all really worried how we will manage when this happens.

Well it sounds like a potential redundancy situation, as there is clearly a diminished requirement for staff. So you could say you feel your role as it was is redundant but as you've been there less than two years you wouldn't be entitled to any redundancy pay anyway, so from a practical point of view there's not really any point.

It's a business decision they are allowed to make - ultimately you can't force them to stay open more days if they've decided they don't want to for whatever reason. So really your options are either
a) accept the 24 hours as being better than nothing
b) resign to leave at the point your hours would be reducing
c) accept the 24 hours and actively look for something else
