Portfolio careers

I've read a lot about portfolio careers recently - does any one have any experience of this? Do they work in real life?

I think the thing I hate the most about my current job/career is the 9-5ness of it and being bound by "work hours".

Any advice?

imagine working in-house but for several different companies as a self-employed consultant. It's business law so there are no vulnerable clients.

what's your field Em?

My latest inspiration is Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics. He's become a Business Guru - stroke- music producer.

Finally - a role model!

Yes, I feel like I need some training in the methodology of Life Coaching, and I also think that a qualification will give me validity, if you like. It's £2.5k though, which I don't have.

Thanks for your suggestion but recruitment doesn't appeal to me at all!

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by 'Linking your current expertise to the exepertise you want to have' and by an 'integrated CV'? My CV is almost all marketing type roles - by integrated CV, do you mean to expand the skill set so it's a much wider and more varied offering?

Reawakeningambition · 19/10/2014 19:27

Well, what does a life coach do?
What skills does he/she need to do that?
This is not rhetorical, make a list.

Make a second list of the tasks you carry out in your current job.
Now pretend you are the clients/colleagues who like and value you.
Ask "them" to make a list of the skills you have. Again, not rhetorical.

Now consider the skills the life coach has that you don't have.

That's what I mean about linking. But don't present it like a CV, go for the warts and all approach.

You are not yet using your marketing skills in relation to yourself.......

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 19/10/2014 22:21

Thanks, I'll definitely work through that exercise tomorrow.

You're right in that I don't use my skills in relation to myself. I actually recognise that already, and was having the same discussion about it with a friend on Friday! I really need to work on that.

Reawakeningambition · 20/10/2014 08:28

It's not easy to step outside yourself though....

Marking place

Feeling like I'm the only one sharing here....

Sorry to sound daft, but if you aren't happy with the work hours or set hours of work per day, why not change?

A lot think or believe its a risk to change job. why not start working for yourself on the side in marketing and health, and work your normal hours. its not easy at first but I found my part time hours where making more money than my full time engineering hours and became my own boss from it. I know it seems sooo tabo but honestly I now have freedom with my family, healthier lifestyle and help others x

[continued]... sorry hit enter too happily after sending a kiss.

If you feel you need the qualification but don't have the money I could help you with the morning and if your previous skills is sales, would be ideal.

But Reawakeningambition has a valid point. If your work has been totally different i.e. sales, but wanting this so much. perhaps adding stuff in like 'under standing your customers in sales and interpreting them', reworded slightly, feel felt found marketing techniques and showing companionship towards the customer which would be in the familiar role.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 22/10/2014 21:50

What is it you do, Hannah? Sorry, not sure what you mean by 'I could help you with the morning'?

I don't work in sales, it's marketing/advertising but not the sales side.

I imagine it's Juice + or Aloe Vera or similar given the language used.

twentyten · 23/10/2014 22:36

A word of caution about life coaching..... Lots of people have trained but few make good money beyond their sector. Have a look at the coaching academy free weekend courses to give you some basics. Lads of great books available. What about consultancy in your field? All my work has come via contacts/ networks( consultancy) for 17 years.....
