I've got interviews for two different jobs next week, one day after the other (eek).

One role is for a local youth charity. Its a 10 minute walk from me, 3 days a week, money not great but I can live on it. The role is a liaison role, working with schools and local authorities to raise awareness of the issue this charity deals with, and would involve making presentations and delivering training o young people and partnership agencies.

The other role is for a much bigger and more high profile organisation. Its full time and would involve a 45 min commute to and from work. Better money. This role is an advocacy and training role, working much more directly with young people on a grittier topic. Much more full on, but the contract is only for 6 months initially, with a view to extension subject to funding.

Obviously, I havent been offered either role (yet! Grin), but am just wondering what I should really be going for at this point in my life?

Role 1 - local, part time, very much within my comfort zone, could do school run two days a week
Role 2 - full on, full time, wouldnt ever be able to do school run, exciting area of work, higher status, prob better prospects , better money

Confuzzled.

The charity job might be permanent on paper but not necessarily in reality. I've not had a good experience in the sector...

I would go for the 3 day week role so I could still do school runs and have extra time off in the school holidays.

What's important to you?

There for the kids, able to do the school run, easy life, short commute.

or

Status, money, career progression, challenge.

We all want different things. Work out what YOU really want and therein lies your answer... Just because you want one or the other does not mean you will always want the same thing in the future. Also, you may want a combination of both in which case neither job is right.

Need to do the same exercise myself!!!!

I would do the 2nd job, because even 6 months at a higher level would help you in the long run.

I should add I work in the charity sector and I have found that by pushing my career progression by taking on more senior roles, I have been able to get greater flexibility, eg I decide how I work my hours, how I take timeowed etc.
it is a high pressure job and I often work in the evenings but for me the career progression has helped my work life balance. I know this is not the case for all sectors.

Role 1 as I value my time over money(within reason!)/ status/progression but it depends what is most important to you personally
