My boss flicked me on the head with a pen today

All because I couldn't find something that she then found. She is a control freak, I hate her. Sad really because the job's a doddle and they pay well... I've never really hated anyone I've worked with and I don't deserve to be treated like this at 37

Anyway, there may be light at the end of the tunnel... got an interview tomorrow... wish me luck

Good luck for tomorrow. When you get the job,on your last day just before you walk out the door go and flick her on the head.(with a cricket bat) see how she likes it.

That is disgraceful. I would put a complaint in writing. If she has got "problems", you don't want this sort of behaviour escalating.

yes twiglett - a punishment - at 37 I am being punished for being a poor employee - well because I couldn't find something in a file LOL!
thing is she's like it with everyone, the difference is I am not desperate for a job, just like working IYSWIM

ask if you can have a word in private and spell out that you do not appreciate her 'flicking your head with a pen' you find it demeaning and totally inappropriate and if it happens again you will file an official complaint

I have a boss who I can imagine doing this too...She too is a control freak and a meddler, and actually quite useless at social interaction...The thing is, if she wasn't such an absolute PITA, but was a pleasent friendly person then maybe a flick on the head with a pen wouldn't be quite so insulting?!

Technically what your boss did counts as assault. Is there a senior management structure/complaints structure or union representation where you work?
Whilst I personally really love the idea of hitting her with a cricket bat when you get a new job if you wanted to pursue an official way of dealing with it you certainly could. If there are other people in your office who witnessed the incident I would quietly ask them to write and account of what happened. You should do the same and sign and date your statement. Even if you do not do something about this incident immediately if there is a future incident or a more serious one you can use the evidence from this occurrence to support any claim/complaint you might make. (Keep the cricket bat handy just in case!)

Has she got a boss you could go to who could have a 'quiet word' with her about professionalism? If someone did that to me I'd take it further, especially if there's a pattern of demeaning behaviour - it's bullying. However I work for a large organisation where I now it would be taken seriously and there'd be no impact on me, your situation may be very different. Hope you get the new job!

After the incident, she tried to make a joke of it saying "I think X might have me charged with assault" I replied "yes I think I might just do that". Later she very quietly, so no one else heard, apologised.
Unfortunately, she is, well we think she is, sleeping with the 'big boss' so any complaint would fall on deaf ears [sigh]. She is an absolute bitch. It's a shame I feel I should leave, my other work colleagues are great, well most of them .
I did have witnesses to the event. Don't know what good it would do to ask them to give a witness account or whether they would be brave enough to speak up though.

Evenyou collegues are unwilling to write a statement you should they really have more clout when done at the time of the incident. If there are a string of incidents you should try to keep a contemporaneous diary of what she does and says. You may never use this but if you ever get to the point where you feel you have to a contemporaneous diary and statements are of great use. Where I work we advise all members of staff who are having probs with other staff/managers to keep a diary, that way if disciplinary action is needed the appropriate evidence is there. This may be even more important in your case if your boss is sleeping with her boss as you may need to go outside the organisation to get this fixed. At the very least keeping a diary like this may help you vent when she really gets on your wick.

It's reasonable chastisement that. Employees, you know. Can't reason with 'em. They just don't get it.

I did keep a diary of incidents earlier in the year ... but her behaviour is unbearable now TBH
Anyway, re new job, woman I would be working with has just phoned to saying looking forward to seeing me tomorrow (for second interview) - god what a refreshing change
