am I being oversensitive here?

Hi. Long time lurker but posting here because I need help.
I've worked in my job for around seven years and have always been willing to do overtime and cover my colleagues shifts at short notice.
I currently work four days a week and one in four Saturday's.
Due to money problems I asked my manager for extra hours so would be doing five days and my Saturday too. My manager ok'd this and asked me to check with my area manager to ok it.
When I went to speak to the area manager today he said that he couldn't authorize it as he didn't want us to be overstaffed. .. ok I was annoyed but it's what he said afterwards that has pissed me off.

He added that since he offered me extra hours two years ago (which I turned down due to other commitments) he wasn't going to give me any extra hours now I'm asking. Am I being oversensitive about this?

He seems to be bearing a grudge!

Can you present a business case, perhaps with input from your supportive manager, showing how the extra money they will have to pay you will solve some problem or other eg actually save them money in the long run / bring in more money / meet some strategic objective.

You are now in a position to make a bigger contribution to the business, which you weren't 2 years ago. You are, of course, 2 years more experienced now.

Don't mention that you need the money.

He sounds an arsehole

Is there any way you could go full time or do you have to wait until a job vacancy comes up ?

I'd be straight back to the manager informing them of the reply from the line manager.
It comes acros as petty!

Thanks everyone. I'll speak to my manager next week. It did seem to me he was bearing a grudge but who the hell can be bothered to hold a grudge for that long? He must have more time on his hands than me!

Amyhamster I don't have to wait until a full time position becomes available we generally try and work out our hours and days between ourselves if needed. And my manager stated we need someone full time anyway.
