HMO2 Hi there,Im not a hca Im afraid but a qualified nurse.Sure your interview will be fine. You will have acquired a lot of skills as a mother/childminder and nanny to stand you in good stead for being a hca. This will include being organised(As a mum of 2 Im sure you are),reliable, well you arent going to run off into the great blue yonder with two kids to support are you!!You have experience of caring for people in a vulnerable position ie children and that need assistance with their personal cares ie washing/dressing/feeding/toileting.Im sure as a mum you have dealt with your fair share of bodily fluids too.The fact that you are a childminder/nanny shows you are able to take responsibility for others, have to manage your time and are trusted and you have patience and good interpersonal skills!!.You will be fine!!

Re hours. It depends on where you are working.
Im in a hospital and our ft hcas work shifts ie 7-3 early shift 12.30-8.30 late shift or 8-7.30 night shift. There is no set pattern to these shifts. However many of us with young kids do have to request specific hours and most places try to accommadate.HTH and good luck

Also,it might be worth trying to get hold of a job description from personnel and read up on it and see if you could ring the unit and ask if you could have a look round.I always think this shows people you are keen and interested!

Hiya, my mum is a HCA and does earlies, lates and nights.

Earlies are 7.30 - 3.30 ish, lates are roughly 1.30 - 9, and nights are roughly 9-7.30 i think.

Good luck.

You never know,if they have stated about flexible working they may be able to accomodate you in terms of more "regular" hours.

They might let you do all lates. Not many people like them, most people with schoolaged kids like earlies. Ask and find out. they will be greatful you are not a 17 year old pothead!

i employ hca's too and am very flexible (maybe too much sometime) but I do try to accomodate staff needs. Must say I'm not in a general hospital though - learning disability setting.

Currently I have:

a student working 3 days but guarenteed same days off for college

a dad who works two set long days

a grandma who works weekends to fall in with her dh's shift patterns and do her dd childcare.

also to add that all employers must respond appropriately to requests for flexible working of parents of under 5's.

I couldn't give every member of staff the same - otherwise I'd never fill the shifts but these three examples all fill in the bits the others prefer not to work - evenings, weekends and especially friday night.

How did it go today? I wondered if you had been yet so did a search on you (don't want you to think I am following you around!)
