NHS job in mental health, anyone around to answer some questions?

I'm applying for a job in the NHS relating to mental health care. I haven't worked in this field before - it's an entry-level role. I won't go into specifics as I don't want to make myself recognisable. (I currently do something unrelated. If anyone is confused by my username, it's a Green Wing character - I'm not a doctor!)

I just wondered if anyone with NHS experience could answer a couple of questions for me?

Firstly, when I'm explaining how I meet the person specification, do my examples have to all come from the workplace or can I use examples from outside work for a few of them? Is there a preferred way, eg all work or a mix of work and not?

Secondly, this may be a stupid question but, if so, I'd rather ask it here first! There are part-time hours available but you need to work as part of a 24-hour rotation. Does that mean you can potentially work part-time hours but you need to be available to do those at any time? Or would it be acceptable to say there's one afternoon/evening when you can't work in term time? (Not a weekend day, and not for a frivolous reason. Sorry if I sound like I'm drip feeding.)

Lastly, it says you need knowledge of mental health care. One of my close relatives had a long struggle with mental illness and I also had some interaction with mental health services many years ago now. In the present day I have supported several friends through fairly serious mental health issues. Should I mention this personal experience, which has contributed to my motivation for applying and given me insight and empathy? Should I not mention my own personal experience because it's not a current occupational health issue and doesn't need to be disclosed?

If anyone is able to advise I would be so grateful.

Hi, I haven't worked in mental health for a few years but based on my previous experience...

  1. fine to use a mix of professional and personal experiences (unless they specifically ask "tell me about a time at work/ a time in your current role where you have had to...."
  2. My work was always set hours but I can't imagine they'd tell you that you have to be available every hour out of 24/7 - any reasonable employer would try to accommodate an evening of prior commitment
  3. yes, that's fine - from memory job specs used to say "personal experience of mental health issues" in the desirable column.

Good luck, hard work but so very valuable!

That's hugely helpful, thank you! And thanks for the good luck wishes. I really care about this field.

That's great - hopefully your passion will come across in the interview as mental health services really need people who care!
