How become Ofsted registered childminder?

Does anyone know - How does one register as Ofsted registered childminder? might this be a way to stay at home and get paid to look after own child? Have any of you done this? Experience?

If you go to the CIS (Child Information Service) web site I think they guide you through to your local authority and they will tell you when they run the courses you need to take to become a childminder (Introduction to Childminding is the 1st course and I think Ofsted require that you have taken this as a minimum) you also have to have a current Paediatric First Aid certificate - which I just took across 2 saturdays.
Then they come and inspect your house to make sure it is safe and do a police check on all the adults that live in the house, then issue you with a certificate and you can begin childminding.
There are a few childminders that use this site so they will be able to advise you more as I am in the process of registering.
(I was planning to start in Sept but my current boss has announced that I can go part time if I chose to so I may take that option - but still register for out of hours child care)

I became a childminder just a year ago when my dd was 5 (so it wasn't to spend time with her!)
There is now a scheme whereby you get buddied by an exsisting CM while you register - contact your local Childcare Information Line (thro' the council) or your nearest CM Network or even NCMA (.org.uk I think)
Good Luck it was the best thing I ever did

Wow, thanks a lot for thoughts and advice! Have sent for info pack from council and am booked in for a meeting, seems worth a try and friend (who gave birth on same day as me to ds too) has said she'll be my first client

Am I correct in assuming that I can then work out of the home for 16 hours per week with ds in creche and "pay myself" to childmind my own ds for the rest if the days...?! I think I could get childcare support of 135 pounds per week?!

No !!!! I wish - but you could earn money looking after someone elses children for 16 hrs a week and get TC's but not the Childcare element (you look after your own children for free - Gov says you chose to have them you look after them) This is being campaigned about to the Gov by NCMA - but will only work in reality if you CM other children as well
