am def considering

can't decide really

What it is, I have a background in advice work and working for charities etc. I would massively love to do antenatal classes for asylum seekers, teenage mothers etc, and am not sure if I'd really get to do that. ALSO I am not quite 30 and IME of antenatal classes most couples are a bit older. Am not sure how I feel about teaching people who are older than me, tbh.

Am doing some work with local NCT atm to see how realistic these fears all are, cos I might be being a numpty.

Once you are qualified you can direct your teaching wherever you want to go.

If you want to work with asylum seekers/children's centres/teenage mothers you can spend your training getting to know people in the area such as HVs and midwives and building up the contacts locally. Once you are qualified, NCT UK Office can help you/your branch to negotiate a contract for NCT to provide services to those groups. Or you can offer to work direct yourself and negotiate your own pay/terms.

Whilst training, afaik, you just have to do the 'normal' courses but you can always talk things over with your tutor if you have a particular reason for wanting to do something different and see if it is possible.

Just because no-one locally is doing similar classes doesn't mean you can't.

One of our local teachers started training in her early-mid 20s. There is someone a similar age or younger in one of my tutor's other groups. So you are OLD!!!

If you want me to try to find someone who is already doing what you want to do so that you can find out more, you can email me at enquiries at nctnottingham dot org or you can contact the NCT direct and ask them to put you in touch with someone.

Or have a look here for some brief info or here

Just in case still interested:

11% teachers, 20% breastfeeding counsellors and 11% of postnatal leaders i.e. trained postnatal workers not coffee group contacts, did targeted outreach work in y/e Sept 06.

Just bumping this thread up out of interest - is anyone here now working as an antenatal teacher?
How are you finding it?

I am thinking of training, so am interested in any thoughts, views and opinions.
