Hi

I'm wondering if anyone can help me

I use to work for the NHS however fell out with my boss (he was a totally nasty piece of work - he would take credit for my work, never support me and even tough the hired me knowing I had mental health issues he would use it against me) I'm now looking to get back into work however I can't and won't use him for a reference as I can't trust he would give me a good reference...

I don't know what to do please help

It's entirely likely the policy of your old employer is that managers don't give detailed references anyway, but just in case they do, just give the HR department as a contact and they will no doubt give a basic reference confirming dates of employment.

Your boss can't give a false impression in a reference, which in practice means he can't say anything negative that he can't back up with evidence. So if there had been performance concerns which had been raised with you in an appraisal, or if you were in the middle of a disciplinary process or something, he could mention those, but he can't just make stuff up.

Even so, if you are concerned, just give the HR department.
