Union rep not striking...

I'm a union rep. I'm not striking on Thursday. I have an interview for an internal job that day. Plus I just don't want to strike.

I've given a lot of my time to employees since I took over. Working with staff and managers to resolve issues, sorting out performance review issues and I really think I've made a difference.

But, as I'm not striking it's a massive deal.

You really need to resign as union rep though, don't you?

ElizabethMedora · 07/07/2014 20:13

How can you be union rep & not strike?!

Littlefish · 07/07/2014 20:17

I'm shocked. You need to resign with immediate effect.

In fact, you need to leave the NUT and join the ATL who are far far less likely to strike.

How on earth can you justify not striking if you are the union rep?

Iggly · 07/07/2014 20:18

Well you're dedicated Hmm

Changebagsandgladrags · 07/07/2014 20:42

Not NUT, PCS.

I was asked to be the rep as I'd sorted out some issues well. I've been clear from the start, I don't strike, I can't afford to not work. Plus I don't want to anyway.

Happy to resign, union not so (desperate for reps)

Change, if you don't strike, then join a union which doesn't/is less likely to strike.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 08/07/2014 07:25

If my rep didn't strike then I'd lose all respect for them.

You really need to resign your position.

PosingInManilla · 08/07/2014 09:39

tHis is weird...

It's an internal job? Wouldn't they be better changing the interview date assuming other candidates WILL be striking or external candidates may not be comfortable crossing a picket line? If not, aren't they leaving themselves open to accusations of penalising people taking part in legitimate industrial action?
Disclaimer: I have absolutely no idea whether that is the case but it was the first thing that ocurred to me.

Changebagsandgladrags · 08/07/2014 19:07

Internal job.

I'll just resign. It's the only union at our place for our grade so can't change union unless I get seriously promoted.

Maybe I'll ask if they want me to continue doing some of the support work.

Picket line. There will be no picket line. I know of only one person who might strike. One person went on strike last time, time before, no-one.

Resign now. I'd resign from the Union too if you're going to go againt their advice. I'm a union rep - I'd never not strike if the rest of my union was out.

PinkSquash · 08/07/2014 19:11

Resign. As rep you have to lead your members, otherwise it will cause major problems especially if some are militant/the union finds out.

Changebagsandgladrags · 09/07/2014 10:48

Right, I've written to the Branch Secretary. I can't resign from the actual union as there is no alternative one.

We have about 5 per cent of the workforce as union members. Very few of our members will strike maybe none.
