Should I ask for a pay rise?

I've been with my company for some years, promoted two years ago and a pay rise then. I have been told by management that I'm doing really well and I know that I am paid right at the bottom end of the scale for my level, it goes up another 40k. Plus two people who work for me (who started as freelancers) get paid more than me, one significantly. Should I ask for a pay rise? Have never asked before and don't want to appear cheeky but I am managing a huge piece of work for the business and hope I am valued.

How well is the company doing financially right now? What about projections - are they positive?

Do you have an HR person at the company?

yes!!

Yes.

Try and find out what the market rate is for your sort of role (there are online sites where you can add things like your location, size of company, years of experience, qualifications and so on, and it'll give you an idea of where you lie.) Also check if your company has particular salary policies, by which I mean that one of my previous companies stated it aimed to set clerical salaries at the local average + 10% for the role, and other grades at the national average + 10%.

Try and gather evidence on your performance that shows you're doing a good job - you may well have this anyway, as part of your performance management/annual review.

There's lots of info online, if you google "How to get a payrise" or similar.

It's a very big company, doing well. There is an HR lead in my area.

Thanks EBearhug. I was also wondering whether I could go to my manager at my mid year review and ask what she thinks I need to do to get a pay increase? Kind of turn it round?

Yes, I think that's a good way of doing it, but it's also useful to have an idea of what you want (and start by asking higher, so there's room for manoeuvre.)
