Tax credits and my contract

Bit of a long back story but this is one aspect I don't have a clue about.

I have a 16 hour flexible contract and I have done for 6 years. I work various shifts over 3-4 days. I work extra hours to cover holidays, days off, busy periods and sickness. I could work up to 30 hours in a week some weeks.

Recently my manager has decided that my contract has to be capped at 16 hours because DP and I claim tax credits (only £60 a month). I have no idea where this has come from and he refuses to discuss it with me.

I don't mind only doing 16 hours a week as we can live on it but it does mean I'm 'not allowed' to help my colleagues or cover other eventualities which is making all my colleagues lives difficult.

My question is are my tax credits any of his business? I was under the impression that I can work what I want/can so long as I declare it to HMRC which I always have and always will. There have been no changes in the wording of my contract and no meetings etc to discuss any changes.

Just looking for a bit of advice. Links to anything that could help me out would be gratefully recieved.

TIA wise ones.

Your tax credits are none of his business at all. Do you have an HR department you could approach?

Your manager is an idiot.

As long as you are working 16 hours as a minimum and are declaring your yearly earnings to HMRC then you are not doing anything wrong.
