Anyone set up business with their DP and did it work out or was it a nightmare?

Working with family can be problematic I've heard. What if dp and I set up a business together? Will our relationship survive? Would love to hear other people's experiences!

We haven't set a business up together exactly but we have 2 different businesses that sometimes have crossover so I help him with his and he with mine. In fact I am actually contracted to his business 1 day a week and charge him accordingly because if I wasn't working for him I could be earning money elsewhere.
We don't fall out as we both have very different areas of expertise and recognise this. I suppose it's easy because ultimately he makes the decisions for his business and I do for mine.

Dp started his own gardening business up a few years back-just part time to fit round his retail job. However it has grown considerably in those few years so he's quit retail and gone ft s-e. The only problem is, he doesn't drive! So I drive him to/from jobs and help occasionally (I also do any admin-phone calls/taxes etc) and although I'm not technically employed by him or a business partner, we still work a lot together.

We do have occasional spats, but not as many as you'd think. I thikn it would depend on how strong a relationship you have and whether you would both get "away" time?

We run a business together. It mostly works well but there have been a few erm...sticking points. In general, you need to be very clear indeed about roles and responsibilities. Who takes time off if DC are off school? Can your roles cross over at all? If so, how do you divide the work fairly? Are you good at separating work and home life generally? Will you be working from home? DSis and her partner work together and work from home and are finding that it is a huge strain on their relationship. She is now looking for a job elsewhere.

It has been really positive in terms of how we view each others capabilities.

Thank you for sharing your stories. Some good points to ponder!

It was a complete and total nightmare and we are now getting divorced. There is a very good chance you will end up hating each other.

If you do decide to go ahead make sure you each have at least one regular outside interest, and a rock solid Plan B.
