Job offer, six weeks pregnant?

Do I take it? I wasn't pregnant when I applied and assumed I had been unsuccessful as after two/three weeks i had heard nothing. Decided to see what hastened in terms of trying for a baby, got pregnant straight away. Then I was called for interview. If I take it, when do I tell them?

Keep quiet until a few weeks time, and act like it wasn't long that you found out i.e after the job offer. They can't legally sack you, as you know. If you need the money you need to think about what is best for you and your baby.

Don't beat yourself up about it, it isn't like you are using them. You didn't know.

I did this, sat through an interview with morning sickness "for the experience". Never thought I'd get it as it was my dream job and didn't have a huge amount of relative experience.

Got offered the job and told HR straight away. Their response was "well, we can't retract the offer, can we?". I worked 6 months, took 6 mat leave (made myself available by email and phone for emergencies) and then worked like a dog for the next 4 years. I think they got a good deal from me as I always felt I had something to prove.

Why would you not take it? Because of maternity pay? What would be your reasoning?

Sodabread · 08/06/2014 14:27

Thanks, yes I guess I wouldn't get maternity pay, although I think I would get maternity allowance because I have been working in another job. I just feel bad about accepting without telling them, but I think I also know what would happen if I do tell them, before anything is in writing, as I have been in a similar position before. You would think I would learn!

Take the job. Pregnant women still need to eat and pay bills! Keep stuhm, if you were able to save £x amount per month for 9 months you'd have £x amount to use whilst on the maternity allowance.

I did this; got a new job, then fell pregnant during my notice period.

I only told them when I was six months gone and couldn't hide it any more.

It was an awful company to work for, though, a huge mistake, and I realised that I could never go back there after having the baby. Particularly as I wasn't entitled to much ML (this was a few years back). So I ended up resigning. I sometimes wonder if one of the reasons I never enjoyed the work, or fitted in, was because I was pregnant and unable to fully throw myself into my new role.

I found out I was pg a few days after I signed the contract for a new job. I felt terrible but decided to wait until after my 12 week scan as I had had previous miscarriages. They were fine about it when I told them but the downside is that I only receive maternity allowance from the government and not even statutory pay from the company. It made any difference to me as I was self employed previously but it would make a difference if you left a job where you would be entitled to mat pay.

Difficult decision. How do you feel about the offer? Is it a company you want to work for? Do you have a current job that offers any maternity benefits that you would miss out on? Sorry more questions than answers...going through similar at the moment although I have not had the interview yet.

Thanks, currently I may get smp, but it will be a battle as I am on a zero hours contract, so will have to add up all my earnings etc and I get barely any annual leave, sick pay etc. and no job security as in therr may nor be hours for me to go back to. This new job is permanent and a good job, I would like to do it, I guess I just have to sacrifice maternity pay, and face things feeling awkward. Still almost four weeks till 12 week scan, and I think it feels a bit strange telling them before then as you never know what might happen.
