Signed employment contract - can I back out?

may be just jitters especially having been out for a number of years but I am thinking that the 3 hour round trip commute will do me in.

is there any way to get out of a contract before starting in a month?

Well you'd be in breach of contract but it's probably unlikely they'd bother suing you. Your reputation is more of concern, assuming you are in a financial position where you don't need a job.

It is very bad form but as flowery said, they are very unlikely to bother suing you.

Do it sooner rather than later tho.

Why not give it a go? If the long commute really is too much you can always look for something more suitable from a position of strength. I used to have a similar commute and found it tough for the first few weeks then came to (almost) enjoy that time out between work and home reading on the train. Would be different if you were driving tho.

Is it really the commute you are worried about if you've been out of the workplace a log time?

Can you give it a go and then negotiate to work at home part of the week? I have a three hour round trip and work at home 2 days a week.

I know what you say flowery and waffle.

I will put this all down to nerves and try to go in there positive!
