New job and days off - opinions needed!

Have been offered and accepted a new f/t job which starts 18/9 for three weeks training. My problem is that my brother's wedding is on 29/9 and they will not let me have any time off during this period. I have accepted the job offer saying that I have no commitments during these three weeks, after previously discussing that they wouldn't offer me the job if I had booked holiday during that period. Do I try and get the day off anyway by pulling a sicky/ ill kids/ childcare prob, etc? Opinions please!!

That's a difficult one. I'd be too scared in case by some weird turn of events I was caught out. Having said that you don't want to miss your brothers wedding. Sorry not much help.

i guess it probably depends a bit on the job but i would explain the position to them and ask for the day off - can you make up the training time later or stay late on the other days of the course?

if i were your employer i would be sympathetic to the request for time off if it could be given without disrupting the training - however I would regard it as a favour not a right because you said you had no commitments and if you expect the wedding to be treated as a commitment then you would effectively have lied to me.

when I was offered the job, I did say I had holiday booked from 27/9, but was told I wouldn't be able to take any time off during the three week training period. I had to think about it hard, but I couldn't turn down the job offer for one day. As it stands, I will still make it to the evening reception, but am v upset and disappointed that I can't make the wedding. I'm not sure how the training will pan out as regards to making up time, but thought this might be a bit cheeky seeing as I took the position knowing that I wasn't allowed any time off. Working for HM Revenue & Customs if this makes any difference
