Work

Why did you choose the day for your day-off?

Going back to work for 4 days and considering a Thursday or Friday day off.
Thursday would be good for family because of their current extra curricular activities (not sure we could do them on a Friday). Thursday off might also suit me because 4 consecutive days (with a 3 hour round trip commute) might really be tiring.

Had Friday off in previous job (very short commute though) and it was a relief to have the 3 day stretch off work. But wonder if Friday is considered to be a more relaxed day at work - wouldn't intend to mess around on a Friday but wonder if it just feels less pressured?

For me not working Mondays really frees up my annual leave as I get 3/5 bhs to use whenever. If I worked Mondays I'd have to use the leave for the Monday but not working them is fab.

Mondays for the pro rata holidays (I wasn't told about this last time I was off and foolishly worked Mondays thinking "yay, I won't miss out on the bank holidays"... Didn't work in my favour working 3 days a week.

I was (and still am this time round) BFing so Wednesday also broke the week up as far as supply/demand. Plus Wednesday was our only day of organised activities which I didn't want to lose.

I don't work a Monday and what I've found is that it's much easier to ignore my blackberry as I turn it off with everyone else on a Friday, and would have to turn it on earlier. I find this much easier mentally. Hope that makes sense.

As others have said, I don't loose my bank holidays either, just get 80% added to my holiday allowance and obliged to take the bank holiday as holiday.

Monday.

I get 4/5 of the (8) Bank Holidays added to my leave (so I get an extra 6.5 days off). If a Bank Holiday falls on one of my work days, I have to use a day off.

So, there are ALWAYS at least 4 Mondays which are bank holidays and 1 Friday. The other days (Xmas Day / Boxing Day / NYD) vary.

By not working Monday, I get 6.5 days extra, but will only ever have to use 4 days if that makes sense (for the bank hols that are not Mondays). I therefore "gain" at least 2.5 days each year (which doesn't sound much but when you're trying to cover 13 weeks of school holidays, makes a difference).

If I had a Tues / Wed / Thurs / Friday off, there could be some years when every one of the bank holidays fell on a work day and I'd therefore have to use 8 days of my leave to cover them. Given that I only get 6.5 days added to my leave, it would actually "cost" me my own annual leave. Hope that makes sense!

Also, I find the week (now that I have 3 children at school) goes more smoothly if I have the Monday off. I prepare for the coming week on a MOnday - everyone has enough uniform for the week, meals are planned / in the freezer, I don't feel stressed on a Sunday night.

I think a massive element of the decision is how your annual leave works. Find that out before you make a decision.

I have Monday's and Wednesday's off. I agree about bank hols and Monday's.

I have Mondays and Tuesdays off. Nice to get work done and dusted and then have a decent chunk of time off. Also there's more continuity at work rather than taking the time in the middle. Also only need to take a Friday off to feel like I've had a good break.

I have Tuesdays off. Monday is team meeting day, planning for the week, when new people and projects start. Friday is usually the day for deadlines, team drinks/lunches.

I don't really get the Monday morning feeling as I know I have the next day off.

On bank holiday weekends, I get an extra day off so have a longer weekend.

I love it!

Depends on the nature of the job, the age of your dc, and what you plan to do on your day off.
If it's to "get everything done, so you have your weekends with your family) then go for a day at the beginning or middle of the week. I curretnly work Tue/Wed Thurs, and get SO much more done (housework, paperwork, etc) on a Monday than I do on a Friday, when I seem to go into more relaxed 'weekend' frame of mind.

If you have school age dc, then statistically, the vast majority of things they want to you to go to happen on a Friday. So if it's for that, then that's a better day.

If you want to get stuff done like your supermarket shop / hair cuts / dentist appts / Christmas shopping etc., then again, go for a Mon / Tue as everywhere gets really busy by Friday.

Agree with others - it depends on how your contract would work with BHs, in my current job you'd be daft to work Mondays if you are part time as 4 of the 8 BHs are always on a Monday.

Crap lands on Mondays - loads of people are out on Fridays so best to be in at the start of the week.
And my son's nursery couldn't offer Wednesdays at the time, so I went back Mon/Tues/Thurs. Lots of my clients never noticed I only worked three days a week - most problems could wait a day.

I only work 3 days but flexibly. I always work Wednesdays and then other days to fit in with meetings etc. I agree Wednesday is a good day to work or not work.

I went back to work in 2011. I chose to have a Tuesday off because that year there were lots of bank holidays and it meant I would have extra long weekends with ds.

When I started I worked opposite someone who did Tuesdays and Thursdays, so that fixed my days off. I changed my role but kept to those days (M, W, F) because we had childcare that worked.

From September I'll still be doing 60% but over 5 days to mean I'm available for both school runs of the day. Works best for the dc, but not so well workwise for me (prefer to be in whole days). No breakfast/ after school clubs and a Dh who teaches in a different county means I just have to get on with it though!
