Don't worry, I don't want you to write it or anything, lol!

I'm currently on maternity leave and due to go back to work in August. For a number of reasons I don't want to go back, as in back to my current job not back to work altogether. I'm applying for a part time admin position at a local hospice and a bit stuck on the "additional information" part of the application, you know the bit where you have to big yourself up.

Anyway a few years ago I was made redundant and while unemployed I volunteered at this hospice, I loved it and feel that it really kept me sane while looking for a new job. I want to discuss that, mainly as a way of showing I am familiar with the organisation but I'm not entirely sure if it's really relevant? What do you all think?

I'd say its very relevant. It shows a genuine interest and additional insight, both of which I'd think would be a big positive.

Yes put in any relevant work experience including voluntary this makes a huge difference. Good luck

Agree it's very relevant. That could easily clinch you the job up against a similarly qualified candidate.

Very relevant. How much more relevant could it be ?!

FlossieTreadlight · 20/05/2014 19:43

Very relevant but talk about in terms of what you gained/added rather than 'I want to give something back/want to work for charity'. Let them know about the insights it gave you to the cause and the key things about the hospice that make you want to work there. Good luckSmile

Ooh definitely. You could explain how you've always thought fondly (or words to that effect) of that time. Now you're looking to come back. I'd definitely add it. Having done it voluntarily also shows you are a caring type of person and you're not just applying for the job because the hours or pay suits you. Personal attributes are so important in a job like that I would think.

Are you still in touch with anyone from those days?
