i work for a small independent business and i have been signed off sick for 7 weeks with pregnancy related illness. i currently get ssp and have to go in every week to collect it... though most of the time Dh goes as I've been too ill. every time i have gone I've been grill by the owner asking am i really ill and "do you actually want to work here as i don't think you do as you have been off sick for so long" to which i replied if i could work i would i have been asked this twice in person and twice over the phone. its very upsetting having to go in as everytime i feel as is i am being judged and pushed away from the job.. i also go asked to give my uniform back as is"by the time your back at work you'll be too fat for it anyway and we need to give it to a girl to can work" .... i don't mind giving it back but its how rude she was in asking.
now i have been told that they can't afford to pay my ssp as they can't claim it back off the government.... so apparently i have to sign a form that allows the hmrc to see my medical records to prove i really can't work? is this correct?
i understand its a small business and i used to work 50-60 hours a week so i know they lost a key employee me being sick... but the owner has turned so nasty and making me feel like even if i get better to work i will not be welcome.
please help the owner is as high as it goes and no hr to ask... i don't even have a contract stating the protocol for pregnancy.

What end result are you looking for?

If you don't want to go back you will be able to claim maternity from the government? I felt pushed out of my job but we didn't desperately need the money so I just left and got my maternity that way. If you need the money and want to keep working then I suggest you just go in there and be firm, I'm not sure of your rights exactly, but as far as I'm aware employers do needs to be careful around pregnant women cause pushing you out of your job could result in a lawsuit.
I would suggest you speak bluntly to the owner and lay down the law. Yes you are ill and yes you are pregnant but you have worked hard for these people and deserve to be treated better. Perhaps you could arrange a meeting to go through it with the owner. It might be hard but if you want to stay on you need to get it sorted and can't be precious else they will win!
