Come and give me some careers advice please.

The last time I had any careers advice was in school, you can't possibly be any less useful than that was. Wink Basically, mathsy boys to do accountancy or engineering, non-mathsy boys to do law, super intelligent boys to do medicine. Girls - pretty ones to be air hostesses and non-pretty ones (me) to do an arts degree in something fluffy or nursing.

So, here's the background. I am nearly 50. I have a degree in Maths and Economics. I was a statistician for a market research company doing massive and complicated multi-country research. I stopped working about 6 years ago. I have moved country and the type of company I used to work for just doesn't exist here (in Ireland). There is quite high unemployment here too, and a load of motivated and flexible people graduating every year so competition is intense and I compare badly with them.

I don't mind retraining or studying for a few years. I have a DS and a DD both in primary school. DS has ASD and would not be suited to childcare so I probably wouldn't be able to start working until he has gone to secondary school in three years time, unless I managed to get a mornings-only job. I am getting divorced and STBXH wants shared residency of the DC, but I don't know yet what that will mean in terms of exact timings with the DC, it could be that I will still have them after school most days and he might pick them up after dinner for an overnight for instance. I don't have an urgent financial need to work, but I can't see myself loafing until retirement age.

What I like is working with a smallish team, I don't like having to deal with lots of brand new people every day (so would be unsuited to high street retail for instance). I'm also fairly face blind so it takes quite a long time before I recognise people. A company of one or two hundred employees with some client/supplier contact would be ideal. I really enjoy numbers and systems. I like to have a project that I can get stuck into and see results from. I work better when my role is fairly well defined, I'm not great as someone else's gofer or assistant but I don't mind working with other people as I did when I was a statistician (helping with project methodology and producing reports). I'm also creative-ish, I have good colour acuity and a reasonable eye for design (not artistic though). My hobbies are quite crafty (quilting and crochet at the moment).

So far my thoughts are learning to code apps, retraining into database management, merchandising, writing Mills and Boon or setting up some sort of craft supply business.

Throw suggestions at me please (not air hostessing Wink )

What would make you happy?

Might you be interested in more of a project management role? I can see you doing tutoring part time for high school kids......and Mills and Boons in those spare moments in between times..

What about web design? There are lots of companies who require web design aspects of their business. It might be a long haul to train you into Oracle Databases as a DBA, but you could start gleaning tips from training videos online (free) youtube etc. It would be the hands on experience from real life situations that you would need the support to gather those knowledges with different platforms...

I don't think I would be that keen on tutoring kids, apart from anything else the timing would be very bad as I would prefer to be working while DS is in school. I have thought about running an after school crochet class at the DC's school (they do a wide range of after school activities), but that wouldn't be a money-making thing really.

I think I would be happy to do something that uses my brain but isn't continuous high pressure. Web page design/management would be the right sort of work, but I would rather work with colleagues and most web designers are freelance and working from home.

What about direct marketing? Lots of data analysis required there for target market segmentation and analysis of results.

Plus there would be some involvement on the creative side as you could be the briefing bridge between the client and your creative team.

Yes, that would definitely be the sort of thing I could do winky. I will read up about it a bit.
