The last time I had any careers advice was in school, you can't possibly be any less useful than that was.
Basically, mathsy boys to do accountancy or engineering, non-mathsy boys to do law, super intelligent boys to do medicine. Girls - pretty ones to be air hostesses and non-pretty ones (me) to do an arts degree in something fluffy or nursing.
So, here's the background. I am nearly 50. I have a degree in Maths and Economics. I was a statistician for a market research company doing massive and complicated multi-country research. I stopped working about 6 years ago. I have moved country and the type of company I used to work for just doesn't exist here (in Ireland). There is quite high unemployment here too, and a load of motivated and flexible people graduating every year so competition is intense and I compare badly with them.
I don't mind retraining or studying for a few years. I have a DS and a DD both in primary school. DS has ASD and would not be suited to childcare so I probably wouldn't be able to start working until he has gone to secondary school in three years time, unless I managed to get a mornings-only job. I am getting divorced and STBXH wants shared residency of the DC, but I don't know yet what that will mean in terms of exact timings with the DC, it could be that I will still have them after school most days and he might pick them up after dinner for an overnight for instance. I don't have an urgent financial need to work, but I can't see myself loafing until retirement age.
What I like is working with a smallish team, I don't like having to deal with lots of brand new people every day (so would be unsuited to high street retail for instance). I'm also fairly face blind so it takes quite a long time before I recognise people. A company of one or two hundred employees with some client/supplier contact would be ideal. I really enjoy numbers and systems. I like to have a project that I can get stuck into and see results from. I work better when my role is fairly well defined, I'm not great as someone else's gofer or assistant but I don't mind working with other people as I did when I was a statistician (helping with project methodology and producing reports). I'm also creative-ish, I have good colour acuity and a reasonable eye for design (not artistic though). My hobbies are quite crafty (quilting and crochet at the moment).
So far my thoughts are learning to code apps, retraining into database management, merchandising, writing Mills and Boon or setting up some sort of craft supply business.
Throw suggestions at me please (not air hostessing
