Catalogue distributing

This may be a very silly question but I would rather ask here than risk doing something illegal in the future!
So I am starting a new job in August but it is a job where I get a lot of free time during the day/ at weekends. I was looking online at jobs where I could earn a little extra. TBH I would be happy with an extra £20/ £30 just to help me with food and other necessities. Would catalogue distributing be worth it? Would it be cash? Would I need to be taxed or sort out stuff like that? If so, I don't think it would be worth it!
Can anyone think of something I could do just to earn a little extra on a weekly basis? It would be great to earn a little extra.
Thanks :)

Cleaning?

Thing is cash in hand is defrauding the HMRC unfortunately.

If you earn money you need to tell HMRC, you may not need to pay tax on it but you do need to declare it.
If you are going to be self employed you need to register that as well so for £20 it might not be worth your while

okay thank you. I thought it may be that! There's not much point then. I am going to be a nanny but will have quite a bit of free time. Maybe I will try to pick up some babysitting or get a sunday job as a waitress.

Will you earn more than £10,800/year in your nanny role? Thats the amount you can earn before you start paying income tax (but you pay national insurance if you earn over £153 a week).

If you are not earning that amount as a nanny, it might be worth working to the 10,800 limit.

Why don't you see if you can register with Sitters, or similar? We've used them in the past, and the babysitters are all nannies, childminders or similar.

LancashireMan yes I will be earning more than £10,800/year. But since I will have just finished university, and having lived off a tight budget throughout uni. I would like to be earning as much as I possibly can in order to build up my savings again.

That's a good idea Flowery I will definitely look into that.

Believe me, catalogue distribution is hard work for very little reward!! For the amount of money you will be earning, it is not worth it. You will not be paid cash in hand, unless you are working for an unreputable company, it will be paid in a commission basis, in the form of a cheque or in to your bank account. (so you will not need to 'de-fraud' the HMRC - such drama queens, as if missing out on paying a few pennies worth in tax can be classed as fraud )
But you WILL get tired feet, be stressed, will never make your quota, be paid very little money for effectively doing a shedload of free advertising for the company!
Please stay clear of these firms who tell you that you will be able to earn loads by working part-time. They are a rip off, believe me, I have been there and found out the hard way. Instead, why don't you approach your local school and ask if they are in need of any lunchtime helpers, or things of that nature? Another possibility is part-time work in shop or cafe?
All the best Smile

Grin ta!

Butterfly that is a fantastic post! Thanks so much! As you can tell I am quite new to all this. I have always had a job since I was 14 but mainly just waitressing/ babysitting! So the whole 'real world' is scaring me! The school is a good idea, I could start by asking at the school my charges will be attending!

If anyone else has any other ideas I would be super grateful :)

Happy to help. I really hope you find a little part time money that can give you some extra money. Best of luck x
