Just wanted to share this in the hope someone could benefit .I've been a sahm for twenty six years, no experience but did a course with the ou ten years ago.
Children are all getting older now and I've been desperate to find a job that I could build a career out of but with on experience in anything I didn't hold out much hope,
One day on a whim I decided to volunteer with the citizens advice bureau and it's the best thing I've ever done.! The training is excellent and I'm learning new skills all the time. I can't tell you how much it has enriched my life and highly recommended it., I go in when it suits me and have met loads of lovely new people and it should lead to a paid job with them eventually. For anyone wondering how to get started later in life I can't recommend this highly enough

Well done on volunteering with the CAB. I used to work for them in a paid role many years ago before I had my children. It's a great organisation that does brilliant work, and like you say the training is excellent.

I wish you all the best for your future career.

This is a really inspirational post! Thank you for sharing it. Just out of interest, how many hours do you need to volunteer per week with the CAB? I have been looking to do some volunteering, but due to commitment with kids might only be able to offer a few mornings a week until they are all f/t at school.....

That is a great start.

I know nothing about CAB though.

How would volunteering with them help to get one into a paid role later on? What skills do you acquire?

I too want to get back to work and realise it will be a long slog.

A few mornings a week is fine, I started doing two mornings ten till one, paid jobs in bureau come up periodically so once I finish my training I can apply if one comes up, again once training ends I get a certificate of competency in advice studies and the training gets you most of a certificate of higher education in advice studies, you've to finish the last three modules under your own steam

Should also have said you can take various courses to become a specialist advisor in areas that interest you, all paid for!
