Hi all Really would appreciate some advice.

So I am job hunting and in the midst of applying for a job as a dental receptionist. The thing is its a Year maternity cover. Would I be correct in assuming that if i were to fall pregnant within this time I would not be eligible to any form of maternity pay, statutory or otherwise as im not permanent staff? If the lady im covering was to then decide not to return to the job after the year (as i imagine many do as they don't feel ready) and they offered me a longer term contract would i then be eligible to a form of maternity pay? I been told you now also need to be employed for at least 12 months to qualify for maternity pay not sure what form of pay that is though.

Im sorry if its complex I just want to know where i stand before making a decision
Many thanks
xx

You would be entitled to SMP provided you were employed when you get pregnant. You may not be entitled to any enhanced pay as companies can set their own requirements for this your period on a FTC should count as employed time towards any requirement though. If you were pregnant when took job you might be entitled to maternity allowance which is paid direct by govt (&you have to apply for). This depends on number weeks you work in the 66 weeks before mat leave (you have to have worked at least 26 weeks).

Hello RicStar Thank-you very much for your response.

So regarding the dental receptionist position although I would be cover staff, as long I meet the other requirements (had worked for them continuously for at least the 26 weeks up to the 15th week ect) then I would be entitled to smp? I was unsure as if the lady returns after the year is up i would be technically unemployed (I would be seeking over jobs leading up to the 12 month deadline just in case).
