I have downgraded all expectations , now I am overqualified, so I apply for bettef jobs, then I am underqualified fas I do not have current experience. Before I stopped work I was practice manager/administrator for a busy quantity surveyors office. Since I have had my two girls I have done an enormous amount of fundraisnig for school and charity, been part time girl friday for a freinds business (till 2010) done very part time admin secretarial and book keeping for my husband who works from home ( this does not coun t in the world of the employment agency), totally refurbished and decorated and restored large house... then sold it.... am now Desperate....both for ££ and for brain usage.......I live in the countrys slowest broadband area so virtual pa etc whilst great idea would not work as work would never get done.....If I am homest with myself I do not really thinkIam able to go self employed and as dh works from home really really (you know what i mean) need to get out

Spin your CV a bit more and have glib answers prepared for when you're interrogated about things. Be prepared to gloss over that the person you managed the refurb for was youself for instance.

For example I have been a freelancer for the past 3 years (slightly true - I've done a couple of jobs and been paid for them, as well as doing a lot of my own research and work just to keep my brain going).

Sure, it's a touch dishonest, but I've never had the job that the advert/interviewer promised either - for some reason all the wonderful benefits/title/advantages evaporate once you're there.

Is there any volunteering / short term project work related to your field which you could take on. Getting more recent experience and references on your CV could be a big help.

I'd also have a look at this post, and ideas in the comments: www.askamanager.org/2013/02/job-searching-after-being-a-stay-at-home-mom.html
