Question for managers/HR type people

I started a new job 6 months ago. It is technically complex and a bit of a step up from what I've been doing previously.

6 months later- have been told am still not producing the required standard of work but my manager is committed to supporting me to get there and has increased the level of supervision.

In your experience does this situation ever end well or should i be looking for another job?

What will happen is either that they will manage you up or out.

Being that you are in your first 2 years, they could have just got rid of you. I'd take that as a complement and do what I could to meet ther expectations if those expectations are fair based around the job role, wage etc.

Do you think you are to the job they want you to do?

It's a good thing as they could have just got rid of you.

Just take all the support, do absolutely everything to ensure you are amazing and I'm sure it will be fine.

I manage people in a similar way and they are almost always confirmed in post after the recommendations

I think I could be in time, but I am frustrated not to be there already.
Initially, I thought I should aim to be up to standard in 3 months-now 6 months has passed and i'm still not there!
I like the job- its the sort of thing I've always wanted to do.
I feel a bit embarrassed to be honest that I'm not competent.

Thanks Fairyloo. That's very reassuring.

What i'm worried about is getting into one of those protracted situations where the manager offers "support" just so that he can say "I did everything to support her" at a tribunal.

And both sides know that the incompetent person will never improve, but they have to go through the charade anyway. And then the incompetent person ends up going on sick leave with "stress" because they can't handle being brought face to face with their own inadequacies all the time.

But you and Funky and right- there is actually no need for that, as they could just sack me if they wanted to, I hadn't thought of that.

Many years ago I moved from an IT role to a completely different business role within supply chain. Luckily for me my old boss had moved into the supply chain a couple of years earlier. The best thing he said to me when I moved was not to worry it would take at least a year to find my feet, as that was what he'd found. Really took the pressure off.

Have others made the same progression as you, how long did it take them, are you expecting too much of yourself or are you genuinely struggling? 6 months isn't really that long.

Make a plan with your manager of what you have to do to be competent. Then execute that plan. It's the only way otherwise these things can drag on.

There are some others who have made similar progression to me. I can ask them how it went for them.
People have commented that it is quite a leap and they found it difficult. I still get the feeling, my progress is slower than average though.
Is that normal then- about a year to get the hang of it?
I don't have much of a frame of reference.

Funky I have a personal development plan.
Last meeting, i think we agreed to meet every two weeks to give me more supervision (I can't remember exactly as I was quite upset)
Also all our work is peer reviewed and manager is peer reviewing me for the next month, so she will see everything i do and comment on it.
Some feed back I got is that I tend not to communicate with the person reviewing my work, and she expects me to get back to her to discuss the comments she makes.
Hopefully this will give us both a better idea of where i am going wrong but it is also fucking terrifying.
When i all these measures written down it really makes me think the situation must be quite serious.
At the last meeting she did reassure me that she thinks i am good and will get there in the end, but its hard to take it on board when things seem to be going so badly.
I really hope Wings is right abut the 1 year thing.
