Team being reduced in numbers - permanent/fixed term contracts

A team at work consists of 16 people doing similar roles. 15 are permanent employees of 10+ years service each. 1 is on their 3rd 1 year fixed term contract and has nearly 3 years service.

Team have been told everyone is equally the pool for redundancy. Is this correct? I have been with companies in past when temporary contracts were just not renewed when team sizes were reduced, does the temporary employee have the same rights as a permanent employee in this scenario?

I think it's probably right, actually. After a certain length of service (might be two years, might be three), regardless of whether you're on an open-ended, permanent or rolling-fixed term contract, you qualify for redundancy terms. I suspect that your fixed-term colleague will qualify for redundancy for the remainder of their fixed term by virtue of the fixed term, and after that too by virtue of their length of service. And once the employer has to invoke redundancy measures, I think their reasoning must come down to operational needs, so last-in-first-out needn't be part of their choice.

Yes, once you have been there two years, the fixed term contract is either renewed or the person has to be made redundant. And they have to be fair to everyone in a redundancy situation.
