Is this standard recruitment agency behaviour?

Not sure if this is the most relevant place to post, but I figured it was! I'm just here to have a rant really and maybe bore people with my problems!

Was verbally offered a new job just over a month ago, and was told I would receive a written offer subject to vetting process. So far, normal. The recruitment agency the company were using contacted me to tell me all the above, and said they would be in touch within the next few days with details of a start date. The job advert said the job training starting at the start of April.

2 weeks later, I haven't heard a thing! I call them and ask for an update and they tell me "oh we had it in our notes to contact you, we need 3 months bank statements". I called them at 5pm, they were definitely leaving it a bit late! So within 20 minutes I send them everything they need for the vetting process to continue and wrote specifically in my email that if there were any problems do not hesitate to contact me.

Again, 2 weeks later I have heard nothing, so I decide to call this morning. The lady who has been dealing with my application sent an email and found out that I had missed out my name on my bank statements, so there was no proof it was my account. Fair enough, that was my mistake. But it would have taken them 2 minutes of their day to call me, 2 weeks ago, telling me this was a problem! Instead I hear nothing from them and have to chase them up, losing sleep over thinking that I'll never get this job. I know from someone that works at the company that there is more training starting in the middle of May, so thought that I would be put down for that if I passed the vetting.

I'm just so angry that they have behaved so unprofessionally and not even bothered to contact me AT ALL! I would love to complain but I don't want to burn my bridges just in case I get offered a job for the second training date.

I'm just so mad! I've never come into contact with such an incompetent company. Argh! Sorry, just really wanted to have a rant. Is this standard behaviour of all recruitment agencies or have I just had the misfortune to come across a bad egg?

There are lots of incompetent halfwits around, and some of them work for recruitment agencies.

Were you interviewed by the actual employer, or is it all outsourced?

If you have a name at the employer who made the offer (and presumably wants the vacancy filled) it might not hurt to ask them how your application is progressing. The agency could be giving them all sorts of flannel.

I don't understand why you needed to provide bank statements. I've never even asked for them from a recruiter, I have used one as proof of address before but I've never been asked specifically for one never mind three months worth.

Oh and from recent experience of 6 months out of work following redundancy the vast majority or recruitment agencies are pretty mediocre to say the least. Hmm

I had my first interview through the agency and my second was with the actual employer and heard back with the verbal offer from the agency 2 days later.

I haven't ever heard of employers needing bank statements either Deva! Maybe because it's a large bank (in a call centre) that the vetting process may be more vigorous? I just wish I knew either way, I'm going to start job searching again because I don't have much hope for this one. I'm just disappointed because I know I would have enjoyed this job and it would have fit in perfectly with my childcare as well :(

No agency should be asking for you bank details. Normally companies have another company specifically for that. Not the recruiters.

Give them another call and ask what is going on - speak to the manager - don't get fobbed off.
