Had offer of employment, when do I hand notice in?!

Hi I have had a formal offer of employment, subject to pre employment check which are references and a medical form. This had a start date on it which means I would need to hand my notice in tomorrow...

I am reluctant to hand in my notice officially until these checks have been done, is that reasonable?

Would it be cheeky to speak to current work (who already know I have been offered a new job) and give them a provisional leave date but don't officially hand my notice in until refs are all done?

My new manager is now off until week after next and I don't know if refs have been asked for. Should I call hr dept in the morning? Its local giv btw
thanks in advance!

Yes don't hand your notice in until you have a letter confirming the job offer and all the 'subject to satisfactory....' conditions and checks are done.

is it ok to email new manager and say that? Won't they think I'm a difficult arse?!

I know the refs will be returned asap and I can return the form same day so its just a case of them asking!

I wouldn't do anything other than let them know you have a job offer and will be handing in your notice when all checks etc are done. I wouldn't worry what they think. Your employment security is more important and I can't see how it will be inconveniencing them anyway. I would think it is common practice to do it this way - I always do and as far as I am aware my colleagues do too.
Good luck in your new job.

Thanks. My start date has been agreed as four weeks from tomorrow though so in theory that means I need to resign tomorrow...I think I will call the HR department and get some advice.

I feel like I am being silly Sad

Is there any reason to think that your checks won't be satisfactory? It's standard wording and I would expect a candidate to resign when they have the offer in writing and terms are agreed

No reason other than I am on antidepressants...I know the references will be fine.

Have you had a formal offer in writing? I definitely wouldn't resign till I had that, not least because I have once been offered a job, and their funding got frozen before I got the paperwork. Also, last year, I did really well at interview, and then their funding got frozen before I got to the second interview (and by the time they got the funding unfrozen, I had moved on.)

I would probably mention it, but then I know I can talk to my manager about that sort of thing. Have you any holiday left? You might be able to take some of that in your notice period?

Just a bit of an update as i thought it might be useful to others.

I rang my current manager and explained the situation, asking if i could give less formal notice, she completely misunderstood me so i went to my higher up manager who said it was at Managers discretion and that should be fine.

He also said they advise people not to hand their notice in until all the checks have been done, so i was right to be concerned about doing that!

I know my references will be fine, it was the extended sick leave i had for depression that worried me, should find out on Tuesday if its all ok.

Thanks for all your help :)

Thanks, me too. At least I am not in a constant state of panic that I am (even if its momentarily) jobless!
