I have just resigned from a company I have worked for for 16 years due to being bullied victimised and hounded out of my job as the manager.

I can understand your desire for justice. But I would suggest you proceed with extreme caution.

You have said that you were the manager and 2 or 3 people were involved in the bullying. Were these people under your direct line management? If so, I think the key question would be how did you, as the manager, let it get that far? What performance management / appraisal procedures did you employ as their line manager to resolve issues?

Were there any disciplinary actions?

If it was the case that the policies and procedures implemented by the company itself hindered you in your role as manager, then that would be a whole different situation.

You need to be very clear on what is was that caused you to leave your job. The people or the systems. If it is the people and you were their senior, it could be extremely hard to prove bullying unless you have written proof (e.g emails).

I pursued a case once and it was a horrible experience. I had lies thrown at me, I had to read and comment on defences that were pure fiction. I was accused of lying at every turn. Every time they could turn the knife, they did.

I carried on and in the end settled for a very substantial sum and a number of other things besides (which I guess you would call 'justice' - a strained admission of the facts by them, acceptance by the MD that two
Board members had behaved appallingly, changes to the business culture that did make a difference, and so on). That's what you are looking for, too, I imagine.

Well, believe me on this point:- It is not worth it for justice alone.

I don't think I slept properly for weeks and weeks. I had one of the top solicitors in the country (named as an expert in this field in the 'chambers' guide) and found I was forever repeating myself, doing their work for them, checking they weren't racking up thousands in doing unnecessary stuff, and so on. Their first confident analysis of the strength of my case vanished half way through proceedings leaving me panicking that I'd lose, and so on. I would lie awake all night long at least once a week, turning it all over. I also panicked that once we went to court my reputation in my industry would be destroyed and I'd be unemployable.

If it hadn't been for the compensation (a huge figure, owing to discriminatory element of my case) I would never have got through to the end.

And I still felt bitter and cheated out of my dream job even after settlement.

Let it go, karma will sort it out for you.
