dp has just taken up a job as a courier . it is his second job to get a bit more cash. he works flex hours and will earn anything from 100-300 a month
will he have to pay tax on this ? will he still need to tell someone (who?) that he has this job?

hmmm well they ought to. it might be worth contacting the IR and informing them

He definitely needs to pay both tax and NI on all earnings even if it is a second job. The earnings also need to be declared on any type of means tested benefit you may get eg tax credit etc. Not only should his employer have taken his NI details etc, he should have had to fill out a form (can't remember what its called) to provide his current tax code etc in absence of a P45. Otherwise its treated as cash in hand. His employer should also be paying employers NI for him which if they haven't got his details, they won't be able to so sounds a bit dodgy. I would get your dp to push it further with them and then spk to HMRC re what he needs to do if he doesn't get anywhere.

he needs to pay tax but i would be tempted to just stay quiet

If you do go down that route, I'd demand cash rather than bank credit as thats traceable and keep an eye on who you tell as you never know who's listening..................!

If you DON'T pay tax then you could be handed a bill for several thousand pounds a few years down the line and you will have nothing to do but pay it.

Does he have a contract? Are his employers actually INSURED or are you covered under your own insurance? Is this LEGAL? It all sounds a bit dodgy.

I never avoid paying tax because I have had friends who have tried this and been caught - and had to pay MUCH more than they would have done if they had declared their earnings in the first place!

i have avoided paying tax (only for a few months) because the money i earned was sooo bad

thanks for all the advice , i thought that if you earn a certain amount then you didnt have to pay tax. i know nothing about this kind of situation. i think he is off the books so to speak , the receptionist told him that some do pay some dont its up to him . they have nothing to do with it . he just picks up parcels and delivers them they pay him so much a parcel etc . i will definitly have to phone IR and speak to someone i think

thanks again
