Good bonus/rubbish pay rise - what would you rather have?

I got my pay rise letter today. 1.28% pay rise and 17.75% bonus. I've been told everyone's pay rise is rubbish and that strategically they've decided to give folks increased bonuses. I'm sooooooooo disappointed as we lost folk last year to redundancy, I've knocked my pan in and took on extra responsibilities, we smashed our targets - and this is the thanks I get. I helped my colleague print off his letter for one of his line reports - and I know I got the same as this person who is deemed as rather rubbish. I have told my boss I'm disappointed and feel its a slap in the face - but I've been told to look at the whole package and that they appreciated what I do yada yada yada. I couldn't help it but ended up in tears with my boss and I just do not feel motivated to work. My husband has told me to be happy with it as its the best bonus i've had to date. But tbh I feel I need it in my take home pay. Is the state of private companies at the current time? Everyone else getting similar rubbish pay rises in the private sector? I told head of dept I was disappoitned but she said there isn't anything they can do as they don't set the targets. I feel I'm being fed a yarn!

PS one of my staff got 1.5% payrise and 13.5% bonus, another I managed to get promoted and is getting 9% pay rise and 7% bonus (usually capped due to job role) and the other got a rise in benchmarking so was not eligible for a pay rise but got 21.5% bonus.

Well, lots of private sector companies are giving no payrises at all, so in that context, a 1.28% payrise and a bonus of nearly 18% of salary sounds pretty good...

It's all about context - if everyone else was getting 3/4% and similar bonuses, and you were getting much less with no performance reasons, then fair enough to feel aggrieved. But if that's all anyone's getting and your employer is saying you are valued and trying to make up for having to manage their salary bill by giving bigger bonuses, that's a bit different.

3 or 4 % not 3/4 of a %!

Sounds good to me. Lots of areas where pay rises are zero or going backwards.

Yes, it is the state of private companies at the moment. I would be glad if I got anything to be honest.

A friend's company changed their bonus structure last year. Higher grades are on one scheme, lower grades are on another, both are based on different criteria. Needless to say, the higher grades are getting a bonus and the lower grades are getting nothing. She hasn't had a payrise for three years either. The company made the announcement on the intranet so needless to say it has all kicked off. She has already updated her CV.

I haven't had a pay rise for 8 years and have had one bonus since then. It is not because I am rubbish at my job because we work extremely well as a team!! Just that my boss doesn't do pay rises obviously!! Think yourself very lucky indeed. I am in the private sector.

Bonuses are often exempt from any pension contributions the company makes, also cannot usually be used for salary calculations when getting mortgages, so depending on your situation a pay rise may be better.

Bonuses are better for companies though as it means salaries don't go up, so in the future the percentage is less, a bit like how compound interest works.

Though nowadays anything is good.

I had a similar experience this year. I was promoted in January but didn't get a pay rise, just the extra benefits of the higher grade (more holiday and higher potential bonus). So, I hoped to get a decent amount in April, but I got 1% which is my lowest pay rise in 14 years, but I did get my highest ever bonus which was around 20% (everyone got high bonuses as the co did really well last year). I'd probably have preferred a higher pay rise too.

Same here I'm afraid. I'm head of department, except they made all of my team redundant at the end of last year. So I'm doing 3 people's jobs plusy own and was kind of expecting that to be reflected in my annual performance review. Nope. No pay rise but 2 days extra holiday, 2% bonus and told that was the end of bonuses for non-sales staff altogether. Really boosts morale...
I feel your pain, I really do, esp about losing motivation.
Keep your chin up and your head down or try and find something else. Good luck x

Same here. Allegedly there will be jam next year but this year it is just bread and skilly. I am now looking seriously to move on.
