Denim skirt suitable for interview?

OK so it's the first time in 20 years I have applied for a job. If I get an interview would my denim skirt be OK (Knee length)? My only other skirts are gypsy or summer floral. All my trousers are jeans. Its a technical job not a buisness or customer facing role. Or will I need a trip to M & S for something nasty???

Yes very bizarre to think the options are either denim or "nasty"!

Inertia · 21/03/2014 19:03

No, not for interview. Just get something plain in navy or black- nobody will really notice that, whereas denim looks like a statement.

Tesco have some nice workwear dresses for around £20-25.

Slainte · 21/03/2014 20:04

Here you go £16

I work in IT and I say definitely no to denim at interview.

I've had an interview outfit from Sainsbury's before (short notice) - I don't think it would have lasted well like a more expensive hard-wearing suit in better quality fabric would (and I donated it to Dress for Success a couple of months later, so I didn't find out), but it was fine for an interview. As Inertia says, if it's navy or black (or dark grey), no one will really notice it, but they will notice denim.

Next have also got some very reasonably priced dresses in their current collection. I got a really lovely dress last week for £26!!

Syrupent · 21/03/2014 20:35

Thanks everyone, think the denim is out! Suspected as much.Think the floral one is too flared for the occasion. Will have to shop methinks. Your suggestion looks good johnny, thanks. The nasty reference is due to a colleague attending intrrview in a thick tweed suit on a hot summers day, way against her normal style and looking like a beetroot!

Sorry a bit off topic but Ebearhug do you know of anything similar to Dress for Success as they don't seem to be that big in the UK

EBearhug · 21/03/2014 21:58

Yes - it's now SmartWorks (apparently they had a disagreement with the US organisers, so it's the same people, but they're going their own way, as far as I understand.)

TacitusMouse · 21/03/2014 22:09

Thanks. They're just down the road from me and I have some barely worn and new stuff with labels on office wear but I didn't want to just give it to the charity shop and they sound perfect

Good god no!

At very least I'd say blouse with skirt. doesn't have to be expensive but dress it up. Suit looks better, preferably not trouser (some people can be old fashioned with these and prefer skirts), but I'd do trousers or trouser suit eg at 2nd if you get 2nd interview. Or fitted dress with jacket. nice shoes and nice bag. you can borrow at least 2 of those (jacket and bag).

Any of the dresses linked to are fine.

Please don't make the mistake ever of thinking just because it's a tech role and not customer facing etc that you can go "as you like". You can't. Your first impression really does count. If they see someone who's dressed for success and made an effort they'll put a tick against her name rather than yours.
