We have just taken on a new employee at work and he has been given a company car. Can anyone tell me how to deal with it. He says he didn't get a mileage allowance in his old job he got his petrol costs repaid. Also how does it effect his pay?!?!?

I'd be grateful for some help - in the 8 years I've been doing payroll and accounts I've never had to deal with a company car!

It is fairly complicated. You need a booklet from the inland revenue about company cars, I can't even begin to go through it online and my mum who is very on the ball with regards to her accounts/payroll regurlaly has to look things up.

He will have his tax code altered but these days it depends on the type/cc of car. There are tables and things. The way we do it at work is to give everyone a fuel card (we use allstar so you pay for petrol using this card). If he wants to re-claim petrol costs then he must get VAT receipts for every transaction. He is allowed a certain amount of business mileage each year for travelling from place to place whilst at work but travel to and from work, personal mileage and the perk of having the car in the first place is all taxed.
