is this allowed? it sits in a cage thing in corner of office but it is not very friendly and howls everytime she leaves the room. I don't like it but can see no choice as a bereavement means there is no one to look after it at home.

I wouldn't think it was a problem because it was in a crate so long as it was walked and cared for as usual. I feel really envious of everyone who works with dogs in their office.

I would love to have a cat at the office. There are cats hanging around, but not allowed to invite them in. Pets make people happier, on the whole.

Sweet Jesus, where do u guys all work???? I need to take dog and DD to work too. I'd love it!!!! GrinGrinGrin

Re OP: dogs are cute. Howling dogs are a pain. Talk to her, as she's not there she may be unaware it's upset etc.

She hasn't got it in a "cage" it's in a crate and it's a perfectly acceptable way to accommodate dogs, keeps it safe and gives it it's own small environment at her work. It's only humans that think dogs are miserable in them, most dogs like having their own space.

I used to be in the army as a clerk and we all took our dogs in. It was great Smile.

No doubt the dog will get used to it and all will be well.

I'd quite like to take my elderly parents with me to work as they get lonely and need looking after Hmm oh, my elderly neighbour also needs full time care. They can just sit quietly in the corner and I'll feed them at lunch time.

This thread is madness, assistance dogs excepted, I can't believe people want to take dogs, cats budgies to work. Grin

That sounds seriously odd to me. A lot of people don't like dogs. Personally, I like them, but I don't think I'd want one in the workplace roaming round, and it isn't fair to put it in a crate. It wouldn't bother me as a one-off, for one day, but no more than that.

The Head of the nursery I used to work in used to bring her dog in, it was a PITA.

Morning!

Today we have 2 lurcher crosses, one Lab, one Springer/Collie, one crazy Cocker and 2 JRTs.

So seven again today. It's all a bit noisy at the moment, but they will settle by 10 (I hope).

My MuttDog (the Springer/Collie) is the best behaved of the bunch she's lying under my desk with her head on my feet. I shall reward her with Bonios...

(At different times we have also had a giant rabbit, tortoise and newborn kitten in the office - we like to ring the changes)

My son takes his dog to work and he is regarded as a colleague by the other humans working there Smile. He has his own chair and plate, a job (fetching the post from the postwoman who brings him treats) and other retrieval and when he doesn't turn up for work he is missed.

It does depend upon the colleagues though and if one person objected, he wouldn't bring him in.

We had PAT dogs on the MH units where I worked and they were amazing. The most unwell clients would settle and be still, able to focus and be soothed by a dog sitting quietly alongside them.

You do need to ensure your dog hasn't recently rolled in fox shit though. They need to be clean. Small overheated offices and stinky dogs do not go together.

LtEve Heaven. I'd rather work alongside dogs than many humans Smile.

It sounds like it's having quite minimal impact on you if it's in a crate in a different room Confused

How often does it howl?

Hi EveesMummy,

It's a MOD Admin Office manned by military and civilian HR/Clerical posts. Year before last we often had 3 Rotties in at a time, but sadly they have all died now.

You do need to ensure your dog hasn't recently rolled in fox shit though. They need to be clean. Small overheated offices and stinky dogs do not go together Oh yes Mig one of the Cockers is a bugger for this. Luckily we have a shower and plenty of Tomato Sauce in the building. The Toller is ace, but seriously 'busy'. She gives the Springers a run for their money in the crazy stakes.

I want the Spanish Water Dog I met yesterday. Crazy looking and really friendly.

Well, I have encountered two workplaces that allow people to bring in dogs. One was a military base, as described by Lt Eve. The other was a well-known dogs' charity! :)

I am frightened of dogs, but I would not mind if they were in someone else's room or were very docile and kept close to their owners.

Mignonette - but it is very hard to be the one person to speak up to say you are not happy with dogs in the office if they are already 'established' members of the team Grin when you start working there isn't it?

I have just applied for a new job, in the 'any questions for us' section it didn't dawn on me to ask if animals are allowed in the work place. Confused.

It's a bit like when you go to someone's house and they say 'you don't mind dogs/cats do you?' If you are a guest how do you say 'yes, I do actually'. Grin.

I used to occasionally take my dog into the office - no one knew she was there as she sat on her mat under my desk and didn't move until it was time for a walk at lunchtime. Not allowed any more :( Mind you, new dog would be much more obvious as she shadows me - although she's very quiet most of the time, unless she's hitting something with her tail.

WholeNewProblem · 06/02/2014 10:08

However, I do feel that if someone in the office objects, then that should be sufficient for a no-dogs policy to be introduced. It shouldn't work on the basis of majority preference.

Someone should also be able to object if their colleague wanted to keep a tarantula or snake on their desk, as these pets might also instill fear in colleauges Grin.

At DC's school the head has a dog, which is around a lot. Lots of parents take dogs in when picking up. It makes for a better atmosphere.

BigWellyLittleWelly · 06/02/2014 10:17

I am very cautious about dogs I've not met before, I would like a dog when the DC are older and to be able to take it to work would be brilliant. Especially as I will by then be working out on site alone much of the time.

I like going to work in the farm offices as there always a few dogs chilling out on the floor. Doesn't always smell that great though!

LtEve - I've got a Spanish Water Dog! He is a bit crazy-looking (ready for a trim) and friendly. Also not averse to a bit of fox/cow/badger etc shit, both to roll in and to munch on if I don't drag him off PDQ. However, I am early-retired so no workplace to take him to. Some of my favourite offices were those with resident (well behaved) dogs.

My gyne brings her dog to work. It sits in the receptionists office and yaps all the bloody time.

I wouldn't like this to be honest, mainly cos I'm not a dog fan and have been bitten before now (needing rabies jabs cos I live in France). Also MIL is severly allergic (was in a coma when younger after spending an afternoon with a dog) and I'd be worried about affecting her if I saw her after work etc.

On the other hand, I imagine that the atmosphere in general would be more pleasant in an office with animals. Maybe less uptight than the bank head offices I currently work in!

MrsOakenshield · 06/02/2014 10:49

my boss where I sued to work brought his dog in about once a week. She was a dear little dog and would curl up on your lap like a cat. But she had free rein to wander about so would follow her owner, or someone else would look after her if he was in a meeting.

The howling isn't great, but if there's been a bereavement I'm not sure what you can do. Hopefully, the dog will get used to it.

It's all very well to say nobody objects to your dog, horse, pot bellied pig in the office as they all love animals. But people don't like to complain and may object but don't say. I do not agree with animals in an office. I suppose in an emergency if one came in for an hour or two that would be OK as a one off.. But on a regular basis - absolutely not.

Wasn't there some sort of study that showed having a dog in the office reduced sick leave in the firm?
