I always new my bosses wife would come back off maternity leave, so my hours would be cut a little. That's fine I worked out I would be ok for a while on a couple of shifts and look for something I really wanted to do.
A month ago this was confirmed.
Today however my boss has told me that he'll only need me as and when he's stuck for cover.
I've been there a year, never had a contract or statement of employment (I've asked and asked), no holiday pay, sick pay etc. Weekly pay but on the books so not a cash in hand situation.

I've been doing 30 hours a week at minimum wage but covered anything they needed, helped out for free if I was around and it was busy. I really have put my all in to be the best I could.

I feel so shocked, it's a really slap in the face. I don't know what to do now. He hasn't told me when this starts from or if I have any shifts left at all.

Sorry for the long post, just needed to get it all out

I think it's a legal requirement for them to offer annual leave so it's not fair you have worked all that time and put in the effort to get nothing back. I don't have any answers for you but thought it may help you to know that I agree that you have been sorely mistreated. You must have some stability there. I suggest citizens advice xx

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I have an interview (this has all happened very suddenly) on Tuesday for a brilliant job, which I'm pretty nervous about, it's a 1pm so I'm going to go to the CAB before and see I'm at least able to get my holiday pay in lieu.

It feels like a slap in the face with every shift in do at the moment. As my boss still won't tell me when and what is going on but obviously I need the money. I really hope I get this job on Tuesday.

Hi Berryglitter

Even without a contract, you have rights and your employer has statutory obligations.

These relate to notice and holiday pay specifically in your situation based on the basic detail you have given.

If you're working for a small family run firm, I'm guessing your boss is probably not up to speed with this. I'd suggest a 'gently, gently' approach in bringing this up with them in the first instance, so that you're not jeopardising a potentially decent reference. Just my humble opinion.

Hope you have a fantastic interview and that everything works out for you very soon.

Fingers crossed for the interview. Possibly he doesn't know as 2retts says. Hopefully, that's the case and when you talk to him he'll be most apologetic. Let us know how it goes Grin
