Student hv failing in practice

Have had a terrible time in my clinical placement. My practice teacher has identified several areas of concern, none of which I agree with but it's her who decides whether or not to sign me off. Spoken to my personal tutor at uni who basically said its all down to the practice teacher and was very much on her side. I feel so low depressed and under constant scrutiny which is affecting my performance even more. Anyone with any words of advice?

Have they offered support in any of these areas for concern?

Just a IMO crappy action plan

What are the areas of concern? Why do they consider them concerning?

WeAreSix · 11/01/2014 18:06

What are the areas and how are they going to be addressed?

Can you tell us why you disagree with your practice teacher?

Shallishanti · 11/01/2014 18:06

will you be able to re do the placement? Universities don't like students to fail.

VivaLeBeaver · 11/01/2014 18:09

Has she given you constructive feedback in how you can improve.

Unis may not like students to fail but in my experience in courses such as nursing or midwifery and I imagine HV they won't let you redo a placement. If you fail a practical placement then that's pretty much it. There;s been a big focus lately on "failing to fail" and how as mentors we must fail students if we don't think they're up to it. But you should be having a tripartite to discuss what you can do.

She has mentioned things like non verbal communication and demonstrating enthusiasm, also record keeping, which I've improved on by trying much harder and structuring my notes better by writing them in rough first. But some other really pernickety things I cannot mention for fear of outing myself I just feel so under pressure and like I can't do a thing right

Can you ask for a different tutor?

Some hospitals/placements are more accepting that sometimes its a bit of a personality clash and other times its viewed as the student trying to dodge a mentor to find a soft touch.

Sorry, practice teacher not tutor.
