what should i tell possible new job about my health problem

I have been off sick with a health condition that was made worse by my job. It is nearly better now and I hope to return to work in a short time. It should improve but i may always be weak in this area.

I have wanted a change for a while and this got me looking. I found something I am really interested in, its something that should not affect my condition I hope and I really like the sound of it.

If I do get an interview do I need to mention my health and recent time off sick? Is my current employer allowed to tell them if they ask for a reference? Would this put them off me straight away? Before this I had a good sickness record.

As I understand it you're not required to tell them about your sickness at all, unless they need to be sure that you are able to carry out an essential part of the job - and then it just means that they can ask the question and you should answer appropriately; you are still not bound to offer the information voluntarily.
And I do not believe that employers can ask referees about sickness records any more.

In the NHS , references are requested after interview and employers are asked for numbers of days of sick and number of occurrence s. Reasons why would comeup at occupational health assessment and is only relevant if there are tasks you wouldn't be able to do. Then it's managers discretion. That's why (in NHS anyway) job offers are conditional on references and occupational health clearance.

Thanks I am hoping I will be back to work before my interview should I get it, then I will feel less concerned about not mentioning anything unless asked. I hope my generally good sickness record will help.

I would only mention it if they bring it up. Not your fault if they don't ask the right questions at interview and then discover something they consider to be an issue later down the line.
