How to phrase career change in applications

Hoping you wise managerial/HR types can help.

I am currently working in one branch of the arts, in a very specific role. On paper I've been successful in the field I'm currently in, but in real terms there isn't enough work. I'm self employed and have had enough!

I've seen a fab looking job in another branch of the arts, which I think is pitched at a good level for me ie a lot of my skills transfer so I have plenty to offer, but there are opportunities for learning and developing. This new job also offers some career progression, hoorah! This branch of the arts is what half my joint honours degree is in, so it's not quite as 'plucked from the air' as it may sound. In fact, I wish I'd followed this branch instead all that time ago when I graduated!

How do I phrase my letter to show that I'm seeking a career change (am early 40s), and that the change of direction isn't a flash in the pan? Also, my current role is so specific that not many people know what it consists of, is there any way of shouting from the rooftops that my skills will transfer and not to write me off?

The new role is to far to commute, but I'd be prepared to stay overnight at my own expense (in an ideal world there would be some home working, but that's not mentioned in the ad), should I mention that, or does it just flag up something that they could have doubts about?

Thanks if you're still reading!

Bumping for advice from late night crowd!

Exactly what you've said. I can't see a problem if opportunities are limited and progression is non-existent. I'd rather have someone fresh than someone who has done the job for years personally.

Thanks, and thanks for the bump, Bloomers. Smile
