Would you request more money?

Hi, I'm not sure if this should be in self employed or here so move if its needed.

Basically, my sibling and I bought out our father of the family business and have split shares 50/50 and both assigned directors. I work 3 days a week, my sibling works 5 (although pretty sure he doesnt do 5 full days)
He is a manual worker and i am clerical.
We recently had to let go of our self employed surveyor and I have taken on all of the office paperwork he did whilst my sibling goes on site. (Baring in mind, my siblings job description is a contracts manager and the surveyor was doing alot of his work anyway).

Therefore my workload has thoroughly increased for the days im in but my money has not. I have mentioned this to my sibling and he has said that i get paid better than any other clerical worker he knows so should be grateful.

I have a one year old and so cannot work any more days but the childcare cost is really affected mine and DH's income. DH cannot increase his work as he is self employed but has been talking about working nights too if he has to, although in his opinion I should be getting paid more.

I can go into more detail but thought it was long enough!

Sorry its long, I just wondered if anyone had any advice based on this confusing mess of a post! Smile

TIA

well what did you agree with your sibling?

are you meant to be paid a fair market rate, or a more equal share (perhaps a percentage)?

Needing more money wouldn't justify a wage increase in the open job market, you'd have to jump ship to another employer willing to pay you more (which will always have a ceiling depending on the skills/education/flexibility that you bring to the role).. or up-skill, take on more work, etc etc.

By saying "i get paid better than any other clerical worker he knows so should be grateful" your sibling is suggesting that you're already paid over the market rate - if he's wrong, you can challenge that. If he's not, you still can - it's between you to work out between yourselves, surely that's one of the benefits of working in a family run business?
