2 or 3 days per week

Hi, I currently work 15 hours a week over 2 days. I have the opportunity to increase to 22.5hours a week over 3 days. This will mean an increase of approximately £300-350 per month. I don't have childcare costs as both sets of grandparents look after the children while I am at work. I work shift patterns of earlies, lates and nights which makes things complicated. I love working 2 days a week, it gives me lots of time with my dcs and doesn't put too much on the grandparents. However looking at things long term I wonder if 3 days is better in terms of career and finances. The only thing is that due to shift patterns I could end up working 5/6 days in a row however can end up with a few days off also. We manage financially on 2 days but obviously a bit more money would be useful! I can't seem to balance up the time vs money dilemma!

If it will benefit you in the long-term (as in career development more than financially) I would go for it.

If not, I would stick at 2 days.

Can you tell us anything about the field of work and what career progression this might lead to in the future?

I'm in a similar situation, healthcare profession, working 15hrs a week. Have had opportunity to increase to 22.5 but declined, mainly because I didn't want to work more weekend or evening shifts & miss family meal time & family time at weekends when kids are all in school. Do you have opportunity to pick up bank/agency work as an alternative way of boosting your income?
If you do decide to increase hours, ask for a temporary increase with review so that you can go back to 15hr if it doesn't work out for you.
