My dh works fo a v small company (there are only 3 workers) the building is in very bad shape. The roof is falling to bits and on wed last wk a bit of the roof fell on dh head, it cut his head but thankfully it was not serious. The boss of the company came in and braught dh home and by the afternoon he felt alot better. He went back to work on the thursday and all dh got was 'ah its just a scratch!'
Now i am absolutely p*** off and tomorrow i will be calling health and safety to report this.
In four yrs dh has worked there he has never seem them come round.
Do you think by calling them tomorrow will have them going round and close them down? is this the right thing to do? Any advice would be great

If the building isn't safe then it will be condemned..who owns it anyway?

I lived in a flat where the gable of the main building fell in to the flat above and we were evacuated and no one was allowed to live there until it was rectified..we weren't even supposed to return to get our belongings

Hi Dunnyjo, yes I would. DP suffered a serious accident recently at work. The HSE went round because of how serious it was, but certain things seem to have been covered up (don't know for certain). DP says there are quite often shortcuts taken, although no more than any other company, but still...He has said that he will from now on refuse to do anything against H&S (the accident wasn't his fault, he was following H&S rules) and if they treat him unfairly becasue of it he will contact HSE.

I don't know what they'll do re closing it down. Bt the building does sound v unsafe, esp if DH is coming home injured by it, so any reports made to HSE are only going to benefit him in long run. You don't want a more serious accident occurring at the end of the day

Now, completely different subject, but check the Meet-up thread you started, there's a few of us over there now!

I have been thinking more and was wondering what do i say when i call h&s tomorrow? What would happen after i do?
Also if dh work does get closed down what will happen finacially? I know this is already a worry as we do live on a tight bugget as it is. Tbh i am scared if he was out of work and all the un known of it all but i cant let this continue any longer especially when i know the boss does not even care.

Last yr dh asked him what if the roof falls down? what about my family? Boss replies it kills you, sue me this attitude stinks. Baisically he could not care less because he probaly does no think it would but it has. He has had so many close calls with bits falling down. All it takes is for a bit to knock him out and he falls into the vat and drowns.
Sorry to rant feel i got it off my chest!

I suppose it depends how bad the roof is if it isn't that bad they will make them sort it, if it is really bad they will close them down until they fix it. If it is really bad and life threatening do you want him to have no job or serious injury. Either way H7S will check to see how bad it is and make a decision on their findings.

I work for HSE - I think you're better calling now rather than waiting for a serious accident to get someone out. There aren't that many inspectors so the company (if it's even registered many be years before they get an inspection.

You can ring and tell HSE what issues you are aware of (it's very common that relatives ring up) make it really clear that you want to make a complaint that you want to make it anon (so you won't have to give your name if you don't want to but if you do they'll be able to get back to you) and that you want it to be non disclosable (ie you don't want the company to know that a complaint has been made).

Good luck with the job but in my experience the company owners often say they'll have to shut down but very rarely do.

Thank you for your posts. I will call them tomorrow and see where that will go.
Also i have found out other issues regards to this. A friend of dh at work had a serious acident and broke his fingers and got glass in his eye. The boss would notlet him put it in the accident book. He did report it to the hospital at the time but nothing else has been done.
The only reason he has not fixed th roof is because of financial reasons.
If dh left work and went to the job centre would this make it a long drag of sorting all this out?
Sorry as you can tell i have no clue!

just be prepared if they do close them down and dh is out of a job - have a back up plan to protect you and your family.

is there any way they could get together and speak to the boss (the other 2) and say they are not happy about working in those conditions. i agree you must do something - what does dh want you to do?

Dunnyjo · 24/07/2006 08:47

He has tried to speak to the boss before but he knows nothing would be done because it would cost him alto of money he cant afford.
Dh has a job he will be phoning for later so hoping it would be good.
He wants me to call h&s he just feels bad about doing it though because he does actually like him but he knows something needs to be done. Especially if he just left and found out that someone was badly injured or even worse killed.
