Maternity Paye

After reading the thread about interviewing a lady and her saying she may be pregnant, I had a look at the site about maternity pay and qualifying. I am confused!! And not pregnant but would like to start a family soon.
If say for intstance, you get pregnant within a week of starting work, who do you get your maternity pay from? I always thought that no matter how long you have worked in a position, they must pay the Maternity Pay, but now I think that may be wrong???

No you have to have been with your employer for a minimum of 26 weeks I think it is.

If you haven't, you can claim Maternity Allowance via the job centre which comes fromthe goverment.
This pays £108 a week for 6 months.

I dont really see why the employers dont just pay it, they can claim it back anyway I think. That is the impression I was getting, to do with the 26 weeks matter.
I have a part-time position, and was thinking of temping on other days, but then if and when I fall pregnant I think I can only claim the 90% for 6 wks from the part-time job, as the others may be temporary.
Also, I have to discuss with employers, but they may only need me for another year, and say if I fall pregnant in 6 months time, and only have 6 months left at work, do they still pay the maternity pay? Even though I will leave there when 6 months pregnant for example?

If you leave before you have your baby and will no longer be working for them then I don't think they will pay Maternity pay as you will no longer be an employee.

Normal Maternity pay is generally 90% of your wage for the first 6 weeks and then £100 a week there after, paid for 6 months. After this you can take additional Maternity leave but this is unpaid.

Have a read through this Maternity rights info

Its very informative.

I had a real nightmare with my job as I am only sessionaly employed and it involved working with potentially dangerous young people so as soon as I found out I was pregnant I didn't work anymore. Because of this I hadn't paid enough National Insurance contributions so therefore my employer couldn't pay me Statutory Maternity Pay and I had to claim for Maternity Allowance.
I started getting this at 29 weeks of my pregnancy, baby is due 13th of next month and the payments stop at the end of November.

Good luck in ttc!

Employers can only claim it back if they have paid it correctly in the first place.

You must have NI contributions for 26 continuous weeks when you are at the 15th week of pregnancy.

I will go and have a look, im sure my employers would try to help out as much as possible, im a Nanny by the way, and they are really lovely. I will be suprised if they wouldnt have to pay SMP to me if I would leave before baby is born, to the fact that they wouldn't need me. Basically their little boy will go to Nursery on the days that I work, so it would make sense for me to leave to have a baby at that point, Ive only started a month ago, so I dont want to bring up this coversation and frighten them!! They have basically mentioned that when the child gets to a certain age they would like him to go to Nursery a few times a week, and im guessing this will be on my days, which would work well for all of us!
