Annual leave

I've just been moved onto a new contract at work. I work part time. For the first contract my AL was calculated in hours, this time it has been calculated in days. Does it make any difference?

Hi WipsGlitter. It really does depend on a few things, we changed our staff from hours to days and they were actually a little better off. I work in HR so if you want to private message me the details of before and after I would be more than happy to take a look for you.

It is in the rounding, they can not round you down they must round you up either to half or full days. It depends what your hours are, how many hours you work per day etc as to whether you gain and how much. If you always work the same number of hours per day it will be small.

As long as you work the same, or virtually the same, hours each day, then doing annual leave in days is easier and simpler. If you work different hours each day, so taking, say, a Monday off would be 6 hours but taking a Tuesday off would be 3 hours, that's when having holiday calculated in hours is better.

What hours do you work OP?

I work the same hours Monday to Thursday 9.30-4.15 and then 8.30-12.30 on Friday.

Ok, in that case I'd consider asking if you can revert to hours. If you take all your leave on Mondays to Thursdays you'll be up on the deal as you get paid more for those days, but you'll get paid less for taking a Friday off.

It will probably all come out in the wash, but if it's in hours you'll just take the appropriate number of hours for whatever day you want to take off and won't lose out if you want to take lots of Fridays off.
