How do I have my cake and eat it too?

Hi,

I would really welcome an objective opinion as I'm starting to go around in circles about how to manage some work issues.

Regrade - this carrot has been dangled in front of me for the last three years but with no progress as there was a recruitment and promotion freeze at work. In the last year I have changed jobs and there have also been some significant changes with senior management which mean this may be back on the cards but would require some sleek moves to achieve.
Acting Up pay - before my old department closed I covered the post of my line manager for three months. I have been chasing acting up pay for that for over a year now and have finally started to make some progress as I have recently been offered a partial payment.
Flexible working request - I had a baby earlier this year and would like to explore flexible working now that my maternity leave has finished.

I apologise if all of the above makes me sound like an over-entitled arse: it's actually a case of my having been taken advantge of for quite a long time in the hope that it would pay off longer term and now it's like 3 buses have turned up at once. I don't really want to give up on any of the strands but I'm realistic enough to understand I've got virtually no chance of managing to pull it all off.

Does anyone have any advice or practical tips/tactics on how to approach this, where I'm better off concentrating my efforts and where I should compromise they could share please? Have any of you managed to simultaneously achieve a regrade whilst in the process of reducing hours?

Should I accept the part payment even though it is significantly less than the total of my claim in the hope that my future plans re: flexible working can be more favourably received? Or do I stick to my guns as a bird in the hand, etc.?

Many thanks,

Go for it all. It's like reaching for the stars: you might get the moon.

The acting up pay - you did the work therefore you should be paid for it. Open and shut case.
The upgrading - you haven't provided enough details here but presumably you can write down what you were/are doing that matches the responsibilities of the higher grade. If you have evidence from someone else, such as an appraisal or something, it will strengthen your case.

Flexible working - you are entitled by law to ask. Are you planning to play the 'give me flexi or I leave' card? What are you thinking of: 3 day week, or 1 less hour per day or ehat - it might make a difference to their response. How well can the business / your dept function successfully without you being there 100%?

Good luck.

Thanks for the support: putting it in those terms does make me look at it differently and I shouldn't start thinking in a defeatist way now or I'll be doing HR's job for them. I'm going to have a serious go at the lot. Cheers!
