Funding teacher training with a toddler

I'm thinking of a career switch to become a primary school teacher but, with a toddler in childcare, I just don't know if I can afford it.
I've been working six years as a journalist but the industry is dying and I need to retrain. Being a primary school teacher really appeals to me, I love kids and education. And it would work well around having a family.
But it's the initial costs of training that are putting me off. I don't earn much now (£17k for 30 hours a week) so I just can't get my head around how people pay for it? Tuition is £9k, I would need around £17k still to live off and pay childcare. I already have student loans for my degree and journalism training..
Has anybody else managed this? Am I mad in thinking it's even possible? Or are there any grants out there for mature students?
Any advice would be much appreciated. I've never used Mumsnet before but I'm in such a muddle!

Its so hard now that these courses cost 9k - but as your starting salary wd be up to 27k (depending on area) I would say it sounds a great idea!
There are professional development loans available at low interest, and there is the usual student loan system. Once you start earning you will begin to pay this off very slowly.
Your alternative option to a pgce is to do a gtp/scitt course where you train on the job and for an unqualified teacher wage - around 17k. However I would say that this might be too full on with a toddler. Both pgce and gtp are stressful, intense years but fully worth it. You then have your nqt year which is again tough, but this is paid at the full rate.
Recommend the career, its the best (and sometimes the worst) job in the world! You will laugh every day!

Thank you.. I will give it a try. Might wait until my little girl starts school first though, seems madness to get a loan to pay for childcare! Thanks for your advice, much appreciated!

Gtp doesn't exist anymore, I think it's called schools direct?

Anyway, before you even think of training, check out the job situation in your area. Primary teaching is highly competitive and you may find that you complete your training and have no job to go to.
