Fair rate for a copywriter?

HiHoHiHoItsBackToWorkWeGo · 28/11/2013 22:43

I've been offered a job copywriting for a website, but they've asked me to tell them my rate... I haven't worked for so long, I have no idea. Help?

It massively depends on experience and previous work. I won't be a great help as I'm breaking into the industry but I think it will help other mnetters if you could give a bit of background. Smile

Thanks smokeandglitter. I have not worked for 10 years and have writing experience in other contexts. This will be regular work, not a one-off - I don't know if that changes it too?

If you're breaking into the industry you're probably quite well placed to tell me! What are you charging?

I used to work for a charity and would use a self-employed copywriter from time to time.

Her corporate rate was £40 p/h and she charged £25 p/h to charities.

I'm up t'north, if that makes a difference? Maybe not in the world of freelance copywriting.

She was quite well established and had some quite large corporate clients.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/11/2013 08:37

If I was employing you I wouldn't want to pay an hourly rate. I'd prefer a day rate or a price for the whole project.

KnackeredCow · 29/11/2013 08:54

If you charge by piece work, make sure you are very clear on expectations of what that includes. You might want to set a limit on the number of amendments you'll accept, for example, before charging extra. You have to make a living out of this, and some clients can be indecisive and unreasonable...

BitOutOfPractice · 29/11/2013 09:02

Yes. And don't underestimate how long it will take you!!

HiHoHiHoItsBackToWorkWeGo · 29/11/2013 10:47

Thank you. So if they're asking for a regular time commitment I suppose I should be thinking in terms of a reasonable daily rate? What would you expect?

I'd expect between £30 -£100ph depending on experience.
