Showing a 'negotiated' daily rate on an invoice

Just pondering something as I work alone at home and thought I'd seek the opinions of others!

I've just done a couple of days work for an organisation and putting the invoice together. I agreed to do it as i might get more work from them in the future and have known them for a while (just not worked directly for them before). Anyway the daily rate that they normally pay suppliers is quite a bit less (£100) than what I normally charge. I'm just writing the invoice and wondered if it would be worth putting my normal rate down and then adding a 'discount' to bring it down to what they are paying me.

What do you think? I thought it might be a useful way to remind them what I normally charge so they would hopefully pay me a bit more if they use me again...or does it just look a bit odd if i agreed to do it for that price?

Thanks

I get that a lot with service providers I use - they put their std rate down then apply the corp discount that applies to my organisation. Query whether anyone pays the rate card fee but that's a different question altogether!

wouldn't bother if it was a flat fee quote tho', as opposed to day / hourly rate.

Thanks Leopoldina - glad to hear it's not a totally bonkers idea!

It was a daily rate they paid me (not a flat fee). I do normally discount my daily rate if there are several days work but this was just two. Most organisations do pay my full rate (or within £20 of it).

Ideally I'd like it not to be a permanent discount - as I'd like them to pay me more in the future! (of course!)

I'd put the full amount, then the discount on a separate line on the invoice. It's good business sense and looks more professional.
You don't want them in future asking for even more discount because it looks like you have a low rate, or telling people your day rate is lower than it is.

Yes I agree to putting your standard rate and then the discount as you can Always agree to a apply the discount again for any further work. As long as your standard rate is not unreasonable compared to others in your field of work they will then think they have got a good rate from you and hopfully use you again. You also don't want other people you work for thinking you have more than one rate and asking for the lower rate next time.

If you are planning to try and up your rate in future (I htink thats tricky tbh) then yes I would show your normal rate and a discount. It might be owrth calling it a "Servie trial discount" or similar to make the point that its a try me price.
